Penrith has one of the most active local drama groups in the county in Penrith Players and we’ve been looking back through our files at what they have been doing over the years.
Our photos give a flavour of the range of shows put on.
The group was founded in 1922 in the town’s St Andrew’s Parish Rooms with a membership of 53. This had risen to 140 by the end of the first year and by the end of its fourth season in 1926 the club had 366 members and moved to the Albion Hall, Castlegate.
The Players moved to their current home in Auction Mart Lane in 1998 when the old building was declared unsafe.
The group continues to thrive and even during lockdown continued to meet via Zoom, read a play each Tuesday and also record plays by local writers. As the saying goes: “The show must go on!”
