SAINSBURY'S at the Brunel Shopping Centre has revealed it will be closing on November 14.

The move from the supermarket chain comes as the company plans to shut up to 15 supermarkets over the next two years – but also opening 10 new ones over the next five.

A statement from Sainsbury’s said: “We have updated colleagues on the difficult decision to close our Swindon superstore in November.

“We are doing everything we can to find alternative roles within Sainsbury’s for those affected.

“Decisions to close a store are not taken lightly and we understand this will be an unsettling time for those affected and we’re supporting them in any way we can.”

Here’s what you told us on Facebook:

Lisa Reed: “This is a shame and a well-needed well-used shop.

“This is well used by local residents particularly elderly and vulnerable.

“Out of all the sites to close this is the wrong one.”

Sarahjane Angel Nichols: “I use it all the time as I work opposite.”

Dee Blockley: “I know a lot of elderly people who will too.

“They can walk to Sainsbury’s and they don’t drive.

“When Tesco goes where do they go for their shopping?

“That’s why people live in town, to be near shops.

“Are they going to provide free buses to out-of-town supermarkets?

“You still wouldn’t be able to manage all your shopping on a bus.”

Tanya Legg: “Still very disappointed they are closing down.

“Will be a terrible miss for those of us who live in the town centre and don’t drive.

“It’s not just elderly people.

“We live off Commercial Road, we don’t drive and always use it.”

Sally Jones: “I wish we could have saved it as I always do my shopping in there, it will be another one closed.

“What will be the point going into town soon, the way it’s going?

“I’d rather go to the smaller supermarket than the great big ones.”

Anthony Small: “Come on Aldi or Lidl, move in.”

Cally Pearce: “You have the other one but I’d imagine its a lifeline for some in town.

“Sad to see it go.”

Kiddle Ruth: “So Sainsbury’s shuts then does the shop stand empty for years?”

Melinda Mikiciuk: “I use it regularly.

“This needs to be saved. Once it’s gone town will close.”

Vickie Lewis: “Been there as long as I can remember. So sad for all the staff.”

Cathryn Bruce: “That’s weird. It always seems busy.”

Richard David Limbrick: “I won’t miss it, they are way too pricey.

“It’s good to get rid of shops that charge too much for something you can buy for a dollar in other countries.”

Julie Benjamin: “Very few reasons to go into the centre of Swindon now.

“Hopefully this exodus by the chain stores will accelerate plans to rebuild and create a safe and enjoyable thriving town centre.”

Angela Langcaster: “I’ve been shopping in Sainsbury’s since it opened.

“Why are they leaving us abandoned in the town?

“We don’t all live outside the town.”

Julia Slack: “Tesco next? Then 10 more Aldis open.”

Karen Curtin: “I will miss it and so will my mum who uses it regularly.

“Swindon town centre should do what ever they can to keep it open.”

Zoe Lesley Fox: “I live local and rely on the town due to disability. Can’t go far and online shopping is a nightmare.”

Clarissa Louise Horner: “I use it as I live within three minutes walk and can’t drive.

“I have to rely on friends and family to take me shopping out of town.”

Ali J Smith: “I feel for the pensioners who live in town that can’t get around much.

“I can imagine they relied heavily on that supermarket.”

Lauraine Lawrence: “I went into town and it’s a shadow of its former self.

“It was never anything amazing, but so many are now closed or closing.

“Very sad state of affairs.”
