A man said he’d been doing 80mph in a 50 zone – because he had been suffering from "stomach issues".

Olivian Mihai, 43, was caught speeding in his 2009-plate Audi A4 on Elizabeth Way, Trowbridge, on March 27.

He told Swindon magistrates this week he’d been suffering from an unsettled stomach and all the public toilets were shut at the time as a result of the pandemic.

“I was working at the time and I had stomach issues, said Mihai, who represented himself at the hearing.

“I couldn’t find a public toilet and after I had finished work this is what happened.”

Mihai, of Tudor Drive, Trowbridge, pleaded guilty to speeding. A charge of driving without insurance was withdrawn by prosecutor Keith Ballinger.

The magistrates fined him £323 and endorsed his licence with six penalty points. He must pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
