POLICE in Trowbridge are reminding drivers to take more care when they park on streets, particularly around schools.

The call comes following an increase in complaints about people parking poorly on pavements, at junctions and opposite pedestrian crossings.

It comes in the wake of parking problems caused by parents dropping off their children at local primary schools in the morning and then collecting them in the afternoon.

Police said the requirement is to provide a minimum of 1.5 metres for pedestrian to pass; this allows space for pushchairs, wheelchairs and people on crutches as well as parents walking with their children.

Failing to obey the rules can lead to drivers being prosecuted for obstructing the highway.

PC Millis Miller, of the Trowbridge Community Policing Team, said: “We have been made aware of the issues that pedestrians are facing when it comes to parking and would politely ask drivers to think about where they are parking when they stop their vehicles.

“Areas that appear to be hotspots are around College Road estate with the local college and school; however, it is not just confined to this area.

“With the schools still open, more people are using the pavements than before and we ask road users to consider this.

“While it may seem like the most convenient place for you to stop your vehicle, you are causing a potentially dangerous hazard.

“I’d also like to remind drivers that it is not acceptable to block a junction or to obstruct a pedestrian crossing of any kind.

“Dropped kerbs should also be respected and should not be parked across, denying access for those trying to access their homes and properties.”

If you have concerns about parking in your area, you should contact Wiltshire Council or report it to police on 101.
