PARISH councillors at Heytesbury look set to ask Wiltshire Council to improve the junction of the A36 with the B390 near Knook Camp.
The Ministry of Defence wants to build seven new single storey accommodation blocks at the army camp as part of a £200 million modernisation programme.
It is also asking Wiltshire Council for consent to construct a new pedestrian footbridge over the B390 connecting Knook North and South Camps for use by military personnel and visitors.
Members of Heytesbury, Imber & Knook Parish Council who meet next Tuesday are being recommended to say they have no objections to the footbridge being built.
They acknowledge that the increased use of the camp means
provision for safety is required on the busy road.
But they are suggesting that, in the longer term, Wiltshire Council considers making safety improvements to the road junction.
They say: “With the clear increase in the use of the camp it is a good reason for the MOD to
consider working with Wiltshire Council Highways to contribute financially and make
improvements to the junction with the A36 to improve traffic flow and make it safer for all.”
They are also raising a query about whether all the options for the footbridge have been considered or whether the footbridge is the only viable option.
They also say a footbridge will visually impact the area, adding; “The galvanised steel should be painted green to make it blend in better with the environment.”
Wiltshire Council is due to make a decision on April 26. Public consultation closed on April 2.
