Concerns have been raised over plans by a chip shop to put up a marquee in a car park next to Bradford on Avon train station.

A group of residents who live at the nearby Stone’s Court say the proposed marquee by Harlees Fish and Chip Shop for dozens of customers could be dangerous and create problems for neighbours.

The Bradford on Avon preservation trust objected to the plans on the grounds they would be harmful to the character of the conservation area.

Margaret Cottle, said: “We’re a listed Saxon town, how they can think they can put that there is beyond comprehension, really.”

Daniel Wong, of Stone’s Court said there would be a “huge loss of amenity” for nearby residents with Richard Cottle adding the loss of the car parking space would lead to customers parking on the double yellow lines opposite, he fears.

He says that the road is often blocked by customer traffic from the fish and chip shop.

“They park on the pavements and double yellow lines as it is,” Mr Cottle said.

Mrs Cottle also raised concerns over the parking aspect, adding that the lane adjacent to the car park is used by small children heading to the town pool.

In the agent statement it was confirmed that the hut would act independently of the restaurant and no food would be carried over the road.

The proposed opening hours for the outdoor dining area are between 7am and 9pm. The group worries, not only about the noise during the day but that there will be no way to keep people coming back from pubs from using the provision late in the evenings.

“At first we thought it was going to be temporary to help the chip shop through Covid but now it seems like it will be never ending,” Mr Cottle said.

Mr Wong added that the planning process has also been fraught as the planning notices were put up while residents were shielding and no planning letters had been put through their doors by Wiltshire Council.

The town council resolved to approve the hut, providing it was temporary and there was a resolution with the problems highlighted by its neighbours.

Sam Fox, director for place said, “We have a legal duty to notify the adjoining properties in writing when a planning application is submitted. In this case we wrote to the adjoining properties and properties across the road – ten properties in total.

"This included some properties in Stone’s Court. The closing date for comments about this planning application is Friday, May 14.

"Residents still have two weeks to comment but we would encourage people not to leave it until the last minute and submit their views as soon as they can.”

Harlees Fish and Chip Shop has been contacted for comment.
