Trowbridge town centre can look forward to over £16m in investment from the government’s Future High Streets Fund.

News that Trowbridge and Salisbury had won £25m of investment from the government came in December last year.

Wiltshire Council has been awarded £16,347,056 for Trowbridge of the £23.7m the local authority had originally bid for under the £830m scheme.

Leader of the council, Richard Clewer said: “We’ve been progressing these bids over the last two years, so I’m delighted to confirm that it is now official, we have secured the funding.

“This is fantastic news and I’m sure will be very much welcomed by our local residents and businesses, particularly as our high streets have been facing so many challenges over the last few years.

"This significant investment means we can now move forward with these transformational projects and rejuvenate one of our town centre and our city centre.”

The projects focus for the county town will be on improving connectivity and bringing more leisure, residential and cultural activity to the area.

A spokesman for the local authority said the project is about "making better use of vacant units to enable a diverse and sustainable mix of uses within the heart of the town centre".

Previously, it was noted that outside funding would likely be necessary.

In February, then deputy leader Cllr Clewer said: "Our aim is to look to proceed with all of the projects but look to see ways for additional funding, particularly around Castle Place.”

Town council leader, Stewart Palmen had asked that any “trade-offs” in funding allocation between projects should involve the local council members.
