WHAT is the best chip shop in Wiltshire? We’re launching a competition to find out.

Takeaway food has been a ray of sunshine for many people throughout multiple lockdowns and virtual drinks, events and endless evenings in over the past year.

There is plenty of choice within the county - with some longstanding favourites as well as some newer fish and chip shops that have opened during lockdown.

Just last month, a Wiltshire fish and chip shop was named as one of the best 50 in the country.

The team at Harlees Fish & Chips, in Westbury, were overjoyed to hear they were a winner in the Fry Awards 2021’s takeaway category.

The awards followed an unannounced mystery dining visit, with shops and mobile units marked on over 40 aspects of their business, from the quality of the food and customer service to their social media presence and their Covid safe practices.

Patricia Hoare, store manager at Harlees Fish & Chips, said: “It’s been a real boost for the staff and a nice surprise. The person who was working when we were visited had only been here for about two weeks, so it was great news for him as well.”

Do you think your local deserves similar recognition?

We want to find out local peoples’ favourite.

Go to www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/wiltshiretimes-bestchipshop to submit your nomination.

Online submissions of your favourite fish and chip shops have been extended to June 20 to give you time to nominate your favourite.

We will then announce the 10 businesses with the most nominations and you can vote between them to crown the Wiltshire Times Best Takeaway 2021 winner.

On June 25, the Top 10 - as voted by you - will appear in the paper with a voting token.

Readers can then vote for the ultimate winner by using the paper voting tokens. They will need to be cut out and posted back.

Regional editor of the Wiltshire weeklies, Pete Gavan, said: “Fish and chips is one of the nation’s favourite meals so we want to get to the bottom of where you can get the best in our area.

“It could be down to the crispy batter, fresh chips or mushy peas – it’s just got to be the best.

“So make sure you nominate your favourite to give them a chance to walk away with the title.”
