Controversial plans for a waste incinerator in Westbury have been approved by the council despite mass objection.
Wiltshire Council's strategic planning committee voted 7-4 for the recommendation to grant permission, subject to conditions and a referral to the Secretary of State for the Environment.
The decision comes after a morning full of speeches by councillors and members of public objecting to the £200m “moving grate combustion” plant by Northacre Renewable Energy Limited (NREL).
Just a week ago, South West Wiltshire MP Dr Andrew Murrison urged the Government to call in the plans as a matter of 'national significance.'
Dr Murrison wrote to the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government to request that Northacre Renewable Energy Ltd’s proposed incinerator in Westbury be called in by the Secretary of State.
The result of this is not yet known.
More details and reaction to follow.
