A WILTSHIRE husband and wife team who grow some of the country’s loveliest foxgloves are at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show showing Salvias instead.

For the first time in its 108-year history, the UK’s most prestigious flower show is being held in the autumn.

Terry and Mary Baker, of The Botannic Nursery and Gardens, at Atworth, are showing Salvias in the annual show which is back at Chelsea after a break because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mrs Baker said: “The show has been a great success. We have been awarded a Silver Gilt Medal, which is one down from a Gold Medal, for our display of Salvias.

"The show has been quite different from the Spring Show, and we've had to do something different what we normally do.

"We've been exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for more than 30 years and our display is in the Grand Pavilion.

"We've taken along loads of pots to display the Salvias, with gravel around the edge."

The Botanic Nursery near Melksham is the home of the national collection of Digitalis (foxgloves), as well as gardens, plant shop and a new garden school.

The show is on from September 21-26, following the Virtual Chelsea Show held from May 17-21.

Organisers say: “RHS Chelsea’s gardens represent the pinnacle of horticultural excellence. Come and see showstopping designs, innovative materials and glorious blooms at the peak of perfection.”

The change in season for the show means that many exhibitors have been forced to alter the look and feel of many of their exhibits, with the leading garden designers having to adapt their plans for the time of year.
