otorists in Bradford on Avon suffered long queues all day after an electrical cable burst into flames.

Traffic in Bradford on Avon was blocked from using a narrow road between Market Street and the roundabout in Silver Street yesterday (December 12).

The fault led to a power cut and caused problems for commuters as drivers were still able to use Masons Lane into the town centre.

A fire appliance blocked the narrow road as utility services workmen dug up the surface near Cobb Farr estate agents.

Engineers from Scottish & Southern Electricity managed to restore power later in the evening.

Witnesses said a mains electrical cable into the building caught fire but fire services and SSE responded quickly to the emergency.

One woman said: “The on-site engineer told me that they will have to renew cable under the highway, closing the road again.

“They are unable to do that until the Holt Road closure is open.”

BoA Residents Traffic Group said on Facebook: “The electrical fire and subsequent road works closing Horse Street /Market Street on Sunday, December 12 caused major traffic problems in Bradford on Avon with long queues all day.

“But it also demonstrated the unsuitability of installing a permanent one-way system with wider pavements. BOA's road network wouldn't have the resilience to handle road closures like this.

“They would hamper access for emergency vehicles, force lengthy detours and make it impossible for residents to leave or enter some roads (e.g. Coppice Hill & Whiteheads Lane)."
