TWO alleged hunt saboteurs accused of clashing with a pro-hunting group outside the Red Lion pub at Lacock last December are to stand trial in Swindon in September.

Andrew Purbrick, 59, from Westbury, and Adrian Earl, 52, from Calne, have both been charged with using threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of violence.

Mr Earl is also accused of smashing a mobile phone out of someone's hand.

The charges relate to allegations of an incident outside the Red Lion pub in Lacock when the Avon Vale Hunt passed through on December 27 for its traditional Boxing Day meet.

Mr Purbrick and Mr Earl both deny any wrongdoing. They have been released on unconditional bail.

They are both due to appear at Swindon Magistrates' Court on September 29, with a case management hearing on June 8.

In separate proceedings last week three hunt supporters were fined after admitting they punched saboteurs.

Wiltshire Police has been strongly criticised for its handling of the hunt meet after scuffles broke out between hunt supporters and anti-hunt protesters.

Officers have been accused of not intervening to prevent the violence that occurred.

Some hunt saboteurs have since claimed one of the PCs present is a full member of the Avon Vale Hunt.

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner said it has referred ten complaints for further investigation.
