MORE than 40 firefighters are battling a large fire at a Hills Waste Solutions landfill site in Wiltshire this morning.
Towering plumes of dense black smoke which can be seen for miles around are coming from the blaze at the Hills facility in Compton Bassett near Calne.
At least nine crews are at the site, including an incident command unit from Stratton St Margaret and appliances from Calne, Chippenham, Devizes, Pewsey, Trowbridge and Wilton, along with an environmental protection unit from Gillingham.
The fire is affecting around 40,000 tonnes of waste at the landfill site and a large smoke plume can be seen heading towards Calne.
People are being urged to close their windows and doors and to avoid the area.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said they received a call just after 5am this morning.
They said: “We’re dealing with a large fire at a landfill site in Compton Bassett.
“Please avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed as the smoke plume is significant.”
