1993: Swindon was jubilant in the wake of town's victory against Leicester City at Wembley to win promotion to the Premier League.

After the 4-3 victory - the fourth scored in the last minutes of the game on May 31 - ecstatic fans waited for their heroes to return.

Player-manager Glen Hoddle said on the 25th anniversary: “On the motorway on the way home, I remember people being on all of the bridges. You couldn’t get up the exit to Swindon. It must have taken us an hour to get into town.

“It was incredible, I didn’t think we were ever going to get back to celebrate, but we did eventually.

“The whole town was waiting for us. They knew there was only one road into the town and they knew we were coming.”

The following day there was a civic reception and the team toured in an open top bus as crowds lined the streets to cheer.
