A RECREATION ground has been damaged by people with metal detectors.

The Wiltshire Police CCTV van was deployed to the Selwyn Hall car park in Box, following damage to the lower area of the Recreation ground by people with metal detectors known as "Night Hawks".

Historic England describes Nighthawking as "the illegal search for and removal of antiquities from the ground using metal detectors, without the permission of the landowners, or on prohibited land such as Scheduled Monuments."

A spokesperson for Corsham Police said: “Members of the public who believe they are witnessing illegal metal detecting should report it by calling 999 if a crime is in progress or 101 if a suspected crime has taken place but the suspect is no longer at the scene.

“Alternatively, to share information about criminal activity and remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
