The game of golf came to Warminster in 1892, following a meeting at the Town Hall in November 1891.

The meeting was called by the curate of Christ Church Rev Hicken and a decision was made to form the golf club.

The course was to be a nine hole course laid out at Arns Hill and membership was two shillings and sixpence (12 and a half pence in today's money).

At the first general meeting of the club just over a month later there were 50 playing members but by the time of the next general meeting the membership had doubled.

The club continued to attract members, many from outside Warminster, and at the meeting in January 1898 the name of the club was changed to West Wilts Golf Club.

In 1906 a lease was obtained from the land owner the Marquess of Bath and plans were made to build a new club house and the course extended to 18 holes.

There was a grand opening on April 3 1907, the date our archive picture was taken. By 1910 membership was more than 200.

At the general meeting in 1919, it was agreed to purchase the course from Lord Bath, who offered to sell it for £1,500.

A company limited by guarantee was formed and £1,700 was raised by issue of five per cent debentures of £10 each. The annual subscription at that time was raised to two guineas (£2.10).

In 1953 a clubhouse was formed from two ex military huts near to the present clubhouse.

The present clubhouse was constructed in 1965 at a cost of £18,895 and further improvements carried out in 1984,1987 and 1994.

Our today picture shows the clubhouse of the thriving golf club, a stark contrast to the building a hundred years ago.
