STEAM Museum is doing its bit to help keep children entertained during the holidays without hitting parents' pockets too hard - its bringing back the Kids for a Quid offer.

The popular Meet the Railway Workers runs this Saturday and again on August 20, and a bridge building workshop follows on August 17 and 24.

Visitors can learn all about the lives of railway workers and step up onto the footplate of locos like the City of Truro, built in Swindon and thought to be the first to hit 100mph.

In the bridge building workshops youngster will be able to build and test their own designs, helping to develop their science, technology, engineering and maths skills.

The museum is a treasure trove of Swindon and railway history. It contains more than 400,000 objects from rolling stock to personal possessions of the Great Western Railway workers. Among the locomotives on show is the King George V, which went all the way to the US in 1927 to help the Baltimore and Ohio Railway celebrate its centenary. There's also a replica of the broad gauge North Star built in 1926, a 1930s GWR buffet car and Queen Victoria's Saloon, built in Swindon and part of her Diamond Jubilee train.

Other displays include a 1912 fire engine that was once based in the Railway Village, horse-drawn vehicles, uniforms, tools, photographs and signs.

Up to four children aged 3 – 15 years can visit STEAM for £1 each until September 4 when accompanied by a full-paying adult. Tickets must be booked online in advance. To claim the discount, visit the ticketing page and enter discount code K4Q22 at checkout. The workshops cost extra.
