The Girl from the North Country is a jubilant musical that makes you feel as if you know the cast, and their backstories almost personally.

The intimate nature of the show shone a light on each and every one of the characters, who all made a quick impression to win the audience over.

It was such a privilege to be able to see the West End and Broadway hit at Bath Theatre Royal on October 5, and I would honestly recommend it to anyone, but especially if you're a fan of Bob Dylan's music, in which case you simply can't miss this show which puts a beautiful twist on some of his most-known classics.

"You Ain't Goin Nowhere" was a gorgeous reimagination of his upbeat song which was released in 1971, and I'm still thinking about the heartbreaking rendition of "Forever Young" performed by the cast towards the end of the musical.

Set in 1934, in the heartland of America, Girl From The North Country sees a group of wayward souls cross paths in a time-weathered guesthouse.

Standing at a turning point in their lives, they realise nothing is what it seems.

But as they search for a future, and hide from the past, they find themselves facing unspoken truths about the present.

It taps right into your emotions, as well as making you want to get up and dance all at the same time.

While at times I would say the narrative was hard to follow, you don't need to be an expert on the storyline, or know the reason behind everything that is going on to enjoy this fabulous production.

The cast includes Nichola MacEvilly as Mrs Neilsen, Ross Carswell as Elias Burke, Colin Connor as Nick Laine, Joshua C Jackson as Joe Scott, Eli James as Reverend Marlowe, Justina Kehinde as Marianne, Teddy Kempner as Mr Perry, Chris McHallem as Dr Walker, Frances McNamee as Elizabeth Laine, Gregor Milne as Gene Laine, Eve Norris as Katherine Draper, James Staddon as Mr Burke and Rebecca Thornhill as Mrs Burke, with the Ensemble featuring Frankie Hart Graham Kent, Owen Lloyd, Nichola MacEvilly, Daniel Reid-Walters and Neil Stewart.

Writer and Director Conor McPherson said: “It’s a joy to be working with our supremely talented new cast. Each of them brings a terrific range of experience and energy to the show. It’s an absolute delight to embark on this new adventure together.”
