The retailer has a shop in the town's Gateway Shopping Centre and says the landlord wants to take back the property.

The news is yet another blow for Trowbridge high streets despite attempts to attract retailers to the town centre using government funds.

New Look announced on social media: “Sad news here in Trowbridge! We’re closing on Monday, 23rd January! We hope to return soon!”

It has now launched a sale with an extra 20 per cent off limited offer in a bid to sell its stock at the store.

New Look is a Weymouth-based retailer with a chain of high street shops in the UK and overseas. The company specialises in womenswear, menswear, and clothing for fashion-conscious teenagers.

It has a number of stores in Wiltshire, including Chippenham, Devizes, Salisbury and Swindon.

An attached image to its message added: "This isn't goodbye... Our store will be closing soon, but we're never far away".

A New Look spokesperson said: “Regrettably, our New Look store in Trowbridge is closing following the landlord’s request to take the property back and exit the lease early.

“We are now focused on supporting our affected store colleagues and finding alternative roles for them within the business wherever possible.

“We have loved being part of the local community and we would like to thank all of our customers in the local area.”

More than 40 customers and a former member of staff posted comments voicing their sadness that the store is closing.

One customer said: “Such a shame, most of my teenage daughter’s clothes are from New Look. Hope all the staff find new jobs.”

One past employee said: "So sad to see it was such a lovely place to work the couple years I was there. The girls were the best group to work with."

It is not yet known if the company plans to relocate the New Look store to other vacant premises in Trowbridge.

There is a fairly large empty shop available in the Castle Place shopping centre following the collapse of Shaws The Draper into administration just before Christmas.
