NEARLY 4,000 people in Wiltshire have pledged to quit smoking during the past year, according to figures released by Wiltshire Primary Care Trust this week.

The PCT said since the nationwide smoking ban was brought into force on July 1 last year, 3,908 people have set a date to quit smoking, while 2,098 smokers quit after four weeks with the help from the trust's stop smoking clinics.

But figures also show the south west has more smokers aged between 16 and 24 than any other region.Maggie Thornton, smoking cessation clinical lead at the PCT, said: "We're delighted to see that more people are determined to stop smoking and it's vital that we keep helping to drive down the figures in Wiltshire."
