A proposal for up to nine homes has been refused in the northeast of Wiltshire over fears of “overdevelopment.”

The applicant was seeking permission in principle to build new homes on land to the north of Newtown Road, in Ramsbury.

The site in question is part of a larger area of agricultural land owned by the applicant, extending up towards Whittonditch Road, and has been the subject of previous outline planning applications.

The first requested permission for 51 new dwellings in 2014, the second for 25 in 2015, neither of which lead to a successful outcome.

The current application, proposing up to 9 homes on the southern section of owned land, was submitted to Wiltshire Council at the end of 2023 and has now been refused.

Ramsbury and Axford Parish Council objected to the application, as did a number of concerned local residents.

The case officer report stated: “The scheme is considered overdevelopment, when viewed in the context within which it is proposed and would create a higher density urban development which would have a detrimental impact on the rural character of the area.”

The site was concluded to be in an “unsustainable location” in the open countryside.
