Firefighters have been called to an airing cupboard fire in Wiltshire after towels were draped over a light fitting.

On Saturday at 11.12am, two crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service rushed to a property at The Marsh in Longbridge Deverill near Warminster.

When they arrived, firefighters from Shaftesbury and Trowbridge discovered the fire had started in the airing cupboard of the property after towels were hung on a light fitting.

Fortunately, the fire had been extinguished promptly and it was already out by the time crews arrived at the scene, preventing a potentially large-scale blaze at the address.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "At 11.12am we received a call to a fire in a domestic property in The Marsh, Longbridge Deverell.

"Crews from Shaftesbury and Trowbridge were mobilised and found a fire in an airing cupboard involving towels on a light fitting, which was out on our arrival."

Draping towels over a light fitting in an airing cupboard is a major fire hazard as towels can easily catch fire, particularly when the light is likely to be hot for a prolonged period of time.

Instead, it is recommended to install towel rails within the airing cupboard to prevent accidents.
