A care home is calling on the community to help celebrate the 100th birthdays of two of its residents.

Trowbridge Oaks Bupa Care Home is asking people to send birthday cards to Dorothy Withy and Beatrice Allen, who are reaching the milestone age within two weeks of each other.

Dorothy turns 100 on August 28, while Beatrice will celebrate her centenary on September 9.

Linda Watts, the care home's manager, said: "We’re looking forward to celebrating two of our very special residents, Beatrice and Dorothy, and are hoping the local community will send 100 cards to show the ladies how special they are.

"We plan on decorating their rooms with the cards and arranging other activities to celebrate their special days."

Dorothy Withy has had a lifelong dedication to caring for children and got her nickname "Nanny Pat" due to her love of nannying.

She became a nanny at age 16, during the war, and bravely travelled alone on a troop train to Scotland to care for a family.

Over the years, she nannied for several families before working in a day care centre.

For the last decade of her career, she worked as a carer, and the children she looked after still visit her.

Beatrice grew up in Windermere before moving to Bedford at the age of 10.

She has fond memories of the Lakes and often stayed with her grandparents even after moving away.

During the war, Beatrice worked in a munitions factory in Staffordshire, testing explosives as a chemical measurement specialist.

Now, filled with a love for poetry, playing the piano and listening to music, she reflects on what she thinks has helped her reach her milestone birthday.

She said: "I’ve just been lucky, I suppose.

"I’ve stayed healthy through good friends and good exercise.

"I loved playing tennis, walking and climbing mountains in North Wales and the Lake District – physical activity is good for you."

Those who would like to send a card to Beatrice and Dorothy can address them to Trowbridge Oaks Bupa Care Home, West Ashton Road, Trowbridge BA14 6DW.

The care home provides residential care and nursing for those in need, including individuals living with Parkinson’s.
