A drunk driver who crashed into a tree while high on drugs has been banned after being three times over the legal limit.
Lee Rawlings, previously of Moyne Close in Devizes, had been driving south of the A350 in Melksham in December last year, when he crashed into Farmers Roundabout and then drove into a tree.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on December 11, 2024, after the driver was found slumped in the driver's seat of his Volkswagen Golf, surrounded by drug paraphernalia.
After being rushed to hospital, the 36-year-old was found to be almost three times over the legal alcohol limit, and with a number of drugs in his system, including cocaine and morphine.
Almost a year on from the crash, Rawlings has now been banned from driving.
In a hearing at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 12, the Devizes man was disqualified from driving for three years and eight months.
He was also given an 18 month community order including 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
“Rawlings’ actions that day could have had far more significant consequences," said Sergeant Ayres, of Wiltshire Police's roads policing team.
“Despite drinking heavily and consuming a concoction of drugs, Rawlings still chose to get behind the wheel, putting his own life and others at risk.
“As we have said many times, drink and drug driving are two of the leading contributors to deaths on our roads and we will continue to relentlessly target those who break these laws.”
