Investigation ongoing after suspected murder in Devizes

Police are continuing to investigate the death of a woman in her 80s and have started to question another woman who has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Officers responded to reports of a serious assault at 8:10am on Thursday, December 25 inside a flat in Keepers Road, Devizes.

Despite the best efforts of the ambulance service, a woman in her 80s was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 63-year-old woman, who is known to the victim, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

She sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, but Wiltshire Police has since confirmed she is currently in custody for questioning.

Officers are not looking for anybody else in connection with the incident, but their enquiries are ongoing and a cordon is still in place at the scene.

The victim's death is being treated as murder but police say further information is needed to establish the cause of death.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "Enquiries continue into the death of a woman in her 80s, who was found deceased on Christmas Day in Devizes.

"Officers responded to reports of a serious assault at 8.10am on Thursday inside a flat in Keepers Road. Police attended with our colleagues from the South Western Ambulance Service. Sadly, despite their best efforts, the victim was declared dead at the scene.

"A 63-year-old woman, who is known to the victim, was arrested on suspicion of murder. She is now in custody for questioning.

"We are not looking for anybody else in connection with the incident.

"Formal identification is yet to take place. A preliminary postmortem has been carried out and her death is being treated as murder. Further information is needed to establish the cause of death.

"A cordon set up at the address is still in place while a full investigation is carried out.

"Local residents will see an increased policing presence and we would urge anyone with concerns, or if you have any information that could help with our enquiries, to speak to one of our officers."
