Police have been cracking down on rule-breaking drivers at a “gridlocked” town centre junction.

Officers have been monitoring the junction of Market Street and Castle Street in Trowbridge, where drivers are prohibited from turning left onto Castle Street.

The rule was suspended during major roadworks around the junction last year but is now being enforced again, and police say drivers are ignoring it even when officers are present.

Many drivers have branded the rule “crazy”, particularly as they are facing increased queues on the road due to the ongoing Longfield Gyratory works.

Police warned the public to obey the law to keep roads safe.

A spokesperson said: “Our operational colleagues have been monitoring the No Left Turn at the end of Market Street where it meets Castle Street.

“This restriction has been in place for many years and applies to all vehicles except buses, taxis and cycles.

“During last year’s roadworks, the sign was temporarily covered to allow traffic to use the route as part of the diversion.

“The sign has now been fully reinstated, however we are still seeing a number of drivers ignoring the restriction, even when a marked police vehicle is present.

“We’re reminding all road users to please pay attention to road signs and restrictions. They are there to keep the town centre safer and traffic moving smoothly.”
