A months-long project will close a busy stretch of canal near Wiltshire from next week.

The Canal and River Trust will start work on resurfacing the canal towpath in Bath, between Bathwick Hill and Pulteney Gardens, on April 7.

The project, according to Bath's council, is designed to make the towpath more accessible to walkers, wheelers, and cyclists.

According to the Canal and River Trust’s notice for the works, the project is scheduled to see the stretch closed until June 19.

While the work is underway, the council says a diversion along the A36 will be in place, allowing users a straightforward way to avoid the works.

Posting the update on the Bath and North East Somerset Council Facebook page, a spokesperson said: “This popular stretch of canal towpath between Bathwick Hill and Pulteney Gardens is being resurfaced – making it better for walkers, wheelers and cyclists.

“We're working with Canal & River Trust to deliver the improvements, which will start on 7 April and are expected to take 11 weeks to complete.

“A short diversion via A36 Pulteney Road will be in place throughout.”
