Aldi wants to make Trowbridge supermarket much bigger

Aldi has filed a planning application to increase the size of the branch on Trowbridge’s Bradley Road.

Aldi wants to expand the store’s gross internal area (GIA) by 277 square metres, with an increase in the overall sales area of 256 square metres.

According to documents included as part of the planning application submitted on April 15, given Aldi’s “increased popularity”, additional space is now required to accommodate the full range if its products.

The planning and retail statement says the Trowbridge branch trades well above benchmark levels, with Aldi confirming that the store is “overtrading”.

The statement continues: “The effect of providing additional sales space to stock a greater amount of the same products would not be to increase the store’s turnover, but instead to enable it to better cope with the demands being placed upon it by the existing customer base.”

The expansion of the internal area of the store will result in the loss of four parking spaces currently closest to the main building, reducing the total number of spaces from 112 to 108. However, last year, the site opened a new parking area after knocking down a car wash that had been located on the site.

In terms of design, the international retailer plans to construct the extension “to complement and reflect the material palette and scale of the existing foodstore.”

Although the planning documents do not appear to explicitly state that jobs will be added to the site, they do state that store extensions “typically support up to 10 new jobs in addition to existing staffing levels.”

The council is expected to make a decision on whether or not allow the expansion of the store by June 10.

News that Aldi wants to expand the store comes amid plans to build stores in surrounding towns. Earlier this month, town councillors in Devizes backed Aldi’s plans to add a store in that town after Aldi applied to build a new supermarket and drive-thru  land south of the A361 London Road, currently used as a motorcycle training facility.

Melksham is awaiting a decision on a larger store on Bradford Road, at the former Countrywide site. The progress of that application has been hampered by concerns over the flood risk in the area.
