A popular independent market will see its first event of the year this weekend.
Trowbridge Weavers’ Market will take place on Saturday, May 16 from 10am until 4pm on Fore Street and in the Old Town Hall.
The event brings traders, live music, arts, and street food vendors together in the town centre, and has been a hit in the town since it began in 2019.
The event formerly took place eight times annually, but following a change announced last year, the event will now happen just four times a year. That number is in line with Warminster Independent Market, another highly popular seasonal market.
Speaking with this paper after the dates of this year’s editions were revealed earlier in the year, Trowbridge’s mayor Cllr Stewart Palmen, who chairs the organising committee, said he was looking forward to the upcoming editions of a historically “very successful” market.
“We’ve switched to four markets rather than the eight we had last year," he said "We’re able to focus on times of year when the market’s been most successful. We came to that in agreement with the traders, and it’s similar to Warminster.

“It’s still an artisan market, and we want to build on it. It was very successful for the two years where we held it on Fore Street.
“The old town hall is going to be used for all four markets, and it’s excellent holding it in the venue.
“We’ll be able to focus our efforts and make the markets more of the event than just a monthly market. We’ve looked at the calendar carefully and everything going on around the same time to minimise clashes with anything else that’s happening.”
Speaking with this paper in November last year ahead of the penultimate market of 2025, Cllr Palmen praised the newly-opened Old Town Hall as venue for the market.
He said: “We’re really looking forward to once again using the town hall because it directly links to Fore Street and Market Street.”
Ahead of that month’s event, he said there would be 25 stalls on Fore Street in addition to the 23 indoor units. The market will also see live music performed on Fore Street.
“It enables the indoors to have products not suitable for selling outside to have access to the market. And it will help the Old Town hall become sustainable because they’re gaining most of the revenue from the stall holders.”
