Plans for karting track at former Co-op dairy in Wiltshire

Cotswold Driving Experiences has applied for planning permission to establish a karting track at the Old Creamery at Latton, between Swindon and Cirencester.

Between 1936 and 1996 the Co-operative Wholesale Society produced condensed milk, evaporated milk, and tinned cream for its stores nationwide.

At its height in the mid-1950s, the facility employed more than 100 people.

While most of the buildings were demolished in the late nineties, Wiltshire Council planners have been told that the remaining site has been "unable to attract new occupants for approximately 20 years."

Now Cotswold Driving Experiences, which already offers rally and off-road driving experiences to members of the public on an adjoining former quarry, is looking to add karting to its offering.

The firm wants to renovate the existing buildings as office and reception facilities and proposes to put acoustic fencing around the site - although the applicant points out that a significant amount of noise is generated by lorries on the A419 dual carriageway, which runs to the southwest.

It says karting would not extend past daylight hours, and the number of karts on the track at any one time would be limited to 10.

Public consultation on the proposal closes on October 6.
