Former Swindon Town striker Christian Roberts has promised to put on an even better show after his testimonial was put on ice - with boxing superstar Joe Calzaghe set to play a cameo in next month’s rearranged fixture.

A team of Chelsea legends featuring the likes of Gus Poyet, Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Di Matteo was due to grace the County Ground tomorrow night, but the winter weather forced former Town winger Roberts to postpone the game after discussions with the club yesterday morning.

The match will now take place on Wednesday, March 25 and the extra six weeks of preparation time has prompted the former Gazette columnist to set his recruiting sights even higher, with a fellow Welshman top of the wanted list.

“It’s disappointing that we had to postpone it but I’m taking the positives out of it and it gives us a chance to do even more,” said Roberts.

“Now we’re hopeful about getting Joe Calzaghe on board.

“I was speaking to some of his people on Friday and they said he loves playing football so were very hopeful about getting him to come along - and now we have more time to work on him.

“We’ll talk to his dad, Enzo, about it and I’m sure with his Italian background he’d love to be playing alongside the likes of Zola and Di Matteo.”
