Police are appealing for witnesses after a 34-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Warminster in the early hours of Friday morning.

The woman was making her way home from Warminster town centre at 3.30am when she was confronted by a man she described as being dark skinned near to the junction of Imber Avenue with Pepper Place.

She said the man led her into a nearby copse, forced her to the ground and subjected her to a sexual assault before running off.

The victim made her way to a nearby house and raise the alarm.

Ds Simon Pope of Melksham CID, who is leading the investigation, said: "I am keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time or who has any information relating to this incident.

"We take incidents such as this extremely seriously and Wiltshire remains one of the safest counties to live. However, we are keen to stress the importance of keeping safety in mind when out late at night or in the early hours of the morning."
