A Wiltshire and Somerset family are celebrating the birth of their latest member and fifth generation of the family.

Brandon Withey is the first great-great grandchild of Joan Blundell, 87, of Wylye Close, Warminster, and 94-year-old Gwen Russell, of Frome.

Mrs Blundell’s own mother, Nie, reached a century on the year her great-great grandchild and Brandon’s mother, Hayley Pitman, 24, was born.

The 87-year-old, whose husband, Walter, was from Bradford on Avon, and used to operate search lights looking for the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War, said: “I think Brandon is wonderful. He’s special as my first great-great grandchild.

“The family always get together on special celebrations, and this is another special occasion.”

Mrs Blundell now has four children, 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Brandon’s other great great grandmother, Mrs Russell, has four children, 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

The 94-year-old, who now lives in Frome, moved to Wiltshire during the Second World War when her husband, Stan, was seconded to Longleat to maintain the estate’s properties because he was a thatcher and timber merchant.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out Hayley was pregnant, but I was very pleased. At 24 it’s the right age – that’s how old I was when I had my first child.

“I like the name Brandon. He’s a lovely baby – he looks like a proper little boy already.”

Brandon’s great grandmother, Sue Badder, who is daughter of Mrs Blundell, said: “It’s bad enough saying you’ve got grandchildren let alone a great grandchild.

“We’re all friends in the family, on both sides. We’re all delighted with our new arrival.”

Brandon, who was born at Frome Hospital on November 29 at 7.20am weighing 7lb 2oz, is the first child of Hayley Pitman and Paul Withey, 30, of Frome.

Miss Pitman, who was carnival queen in her hometown in 2005 when she was 19, said: “The family were really pleased when they heard I was pregnant. It’s really nice that we have five generations. He’s a lovely baby but he hasn’t quite got into a routine yet. He wants feeding every three to four hours and he’s normally up all night.”
