The family of RAF veteran John Saunders, who died after he was in collision with a car while crossing the road just metres from his home, have said he would do anything for anybody.

Mr Saunders of Victoria Road, Warminster, died after he was struck by a grey Mazda car on Grovelands Way at the junction with Victoria Road on January 12.

The driver of the car took Mr Saunders, who was suffering from head and leg injuries, to Salisbury Hospital but he died on January 18.

Mr Saunders, who served with the RAF in Singapore between 1949-51, was well known in Warminster and used to run the United Services Club in Imber Road with his late wife Peggy.

He has also been described as the best bingo caller in the west for his bingo calling exploits in the town and surrounding villages.

The 81-year-old’s daughter, Pat, 57, of Sambourne Gardens, Warminster, said her dad was a very kind man.

“My dad would help everybody from gardening tips to a bit of history someone might want to know,” she said.

“He was a great dad, grandad and great grandad.

“He was well known in the town. People would see him on his scooter and he would give a wave. He was a very popular man.”

Mr Saunders was also a keen sportsman, playing for Frome Town, St Martins and Warminster Town, where he continued in his role as membership secretary.

He volunteered at Heytesbury FC and was also chairman of the Warminster Skittles League, playing the sport in Warminster and Westbury for more than 50 years.

Mr Saunders never forgot his military background and was also a longstanding member of the Warminster branch of the Royal Air Force Association. Funeral details have yet to be announced.
