The newly-cleaned Westbury White Horse will be painted by Rotary Club volunteers this weekend, weather permitting.
The iconic monument was steam-cleaned by a team of around 20 on April 14, removing three years of accumulated dirt and lichen growth.
Volunteers had to await permission to apply the special waterproof paint from Natural England, as the land around the horse is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
With heavy rain forecast for Sunday the work is likely to start but remain unfinished this weekend.
Grants of £5,000 were arranged to fund the cleaning and painting by both Westbury Town Council and the local area board, however so far only £3,000 has been spent.
Volunteers hope to have all the work completed by the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June, when the horse will be illuminated.
