Former Olympic sprinter Michael Johnson is to carry the Olympic Torch from Salisbury Cathedral on Thursday morning.

The four-time Olympic gold champion will start day 55 of the Torch Relay at 7.49am from outside the cathedral.

Johnson is generally considered to be one of the greatest long sprinters in the history of track and field having won four Olympic gold medals and eight world championship gold medals during his time.

The 44-year-old has also been tipped to take the torch at Stonehenge but the London Olympics committee LOCOG would not confirm this.

On Wednesday Salisbury's Hudson's Field is playing host to an Olympics extravaganza where Wiltshire Council and LOCOG will host a full-day festival in which local acts from North and West Wiltshire will perform alongside rapper Wretch 32 and Abba tribute band Bjorn Again.

The acts kick off at 1pm, finishing at 10pm with a fireworks display.

Singers, bands, musicians, dancers and free runners from across Wiltshire will be performing at the Festival of Celebration.

Twelve acts have been chosen from the Shine 4 Wiltshire competition to perform at the festival including the winners, Salisbury Plain Military Wives Choir.
