A WOMAN who found herself in serious debt has created a website to help others suffering from money problems.

Vicky Eves, 34, from Westbury, set up ibeatdebt.com after maxing out several credit cards and falling behind on her payments.

After months of burying her head in the sand she decided to seek help from Christians Against Poverty, a money management charity who helped her pay off her loans.

She said: “At the time I was suffering with my dad’s death and I buried my head in the sand. I was sacked yet still taking out loans and spending money on my credit card.

“I was too embarrassed to tell my family of my issues. But financial problems are the same as any other problem, mental, physical or financial. You must talk about it. CAP really helped. They gave me a plan to pay off my loans and taught me how to manage my money. You don’t have to be a Christian to access their services.

“Money stresses go hand in hand with mental health problems. The amount of suicides I have read about due to money matters really upsets me. These are avoidable.

Now, she is passing on her knowledge by teaching people the tips and tricks, on her website, of how to make their money go further.

The website also helps with financial education, something that Miss Eves thinks isn’t taught enough from an early age.

“I feel that young people aren’t taught enough about the skills required to manage our money as we get older. There are plenty of links on my website that can help both children and adults.”

Recently, she has started a government petition calling for the practice of unsolicited credit limit increases to be banned.

She said: “If you manage your credit rating well, the lenders can increase limit without your permission and force you to actively opt out. One of my friend’s credit limit on just one card is £7,000.

“She couldn’t possibly afford to pay this off if she used the full amount. The finance industry are actively encouraging people to spend more money and go further into debt.”

Wiltshire Credit Union said: “People who do no want their credit rating to be increased should ring their bank to opt out.”
