TROWBRIDGE golfer Steve Surry stormed up the leaderboard at the European Tour's Shot Clock Masters in Austria today with the joint best round of the week so far.

Surry, who plays out of the Cumberwell Park club near Bradford on Avon, appeared to be in a battle to make the cut after carding a three-over-par 75 in his opening round at the Diamond Country Club in Atzenbrugg on Thursday.

However, the 36-year old - who only learned he was playing in the tournament on Tuesday - signed for a flawless round of 65, seven under par, this morning to take himself comfortably inside the top 20.

Surry, who plays much of his golf on Southern Africa's Sunshine Tour as well as the third-tier EuroPro Tour and regional Jamega Tour in this country, made birdies at the 11th, 14th and 15th, having started his second round on the 10th.

Back-to-back birdies on the first and second - his 10th and 11th holes - continued his roll and he picked up further shots at the fourth and sixth to lie four under par overall at the halfway point and within touching distance of the leaders.

Surry has not made a cut in a full European Tour event since the South African Open in 2013 but also finished tied 11th at Austrian Open at the same current venue in 2010.

East Knoyle's Ben Stow added a second-round 71 to his opening-day 71 to lie one over par overall and also looked set to make the cut.

Surry's clubmate Laurie Canter was also inside the cut line, despite a one over par second round pundits leaving him level overall.
