WARMINSTER saw their perfect start to the WEPL Wiltshire season come to a halt on Saturday as they fell to a shock defeat on home turf at the hands of Purton.

Peter Hickerton’s side were looking to make it 12 straight wins in 2018 but were beaten by five wickets so see their lead at the top of the table trimmed to 24 points.

Purton won the toss and asked their hosts to bat first, and Warminster would have been relatively content come the break after reaching 278 before being bowled out.

Opener Mark Coxon Tenty top scored with 65, and there were also valuable contributions from Bradley Perry (43) and Dominic Webb (40 not out).

Craig Ennis spearheaded the Purton bowling attack, taking 4-19, aided by Adam Woolford (3-41).

Opener Mohamed Cook promptly took the game away from Warminster as Purton began their reply, however, scoring a sublime century and sharing a first-wicket stand of 215 with Elijah Samuel.

The score had not advanced when Cook fell for 165, but Purton had little trouble knocking off the remaining runs and reached a winning 282-5 with more than five overs to spare.

Warminster face another test to their title credentials this weekend when they travel to second-placed Chippenham.
