AFTER marking their Southern League debut with a 1-0 win over Evesham Town, Melksham Town manager Kieran Baggs immediately warned his players not to get carried away.

More than 400 people piled into the InfiLED Arena to watch Melksham clinch the Division One South points after taking the lead in the 25th minute after Neikell Plummer nodded home.

Melksham’s Mark Cooper was named man of the match for the hosts, who will look to make it two from two with victory at Paulton Rovers on Tuesday.

Baggs says it is important his troops enjoy the season, as they won’t have it all their own way in their new environment.

“We aren’t going to get too excited because it is the first game of the season, but it is three points on the board,” he said.

“I think people will look at it and think that we have made a fine start and rightly so, but that is all it is, a good start.

“It is one game and now we look forward to Tuesday night where we are away at Paulton. This is new territory for Melksham, we are going to ride the momentum and we are going to enjoy going to the new grounds.

“We are going to enjoy welcoming teams to our stadium too. I said to the players before the game that we need to make sure no-one comes to the stadium and has an easy ride.

“That is exactly what Evesham found out. We were exceptional all over the field and I think it is the best team performance that I have been a part of since I have been here.

“The players deserve all of the credit. Everything that we worked on during pre-season has come to the forefront and our fitness levels looked really good.

“No-one is getting ahead of themselves, I won’t get too excited if we win and I won’t get too upset if we lose, we will just tick over and see what happens.”

Baggs went through a thorough scout of their opponents, and says they were exactly what they were expecting to come up against.

“My assistant Luke Ballinger went down to watch one of their pre-season games, so we had them well scouted,” he added.

“We were aware of their formation and where their threats will be. They’ll be there or thereabouts this season, they’re a top side.

“We deserved the win but they’re a good side and on another day the result could have gone a different way.”
