TROWBRIDGE skipper Tom Weaver isn’t taking his side’s advantageous Premier Two Glos/Wilts position for granted ahead of a crunch tie against Cheltenham this weekend.

The current West of England Cricket League structure means three teams have been earmarked for relegation from Prem Two.

With Trowbridge currently sitting fourth from bottom, Weaver understand his side’s precious situation as they look to down the league leaders at the Victoria Ground come Saturday.

Weaver said: “We have pulled away from Westbury in recent weeks and I think that meant we entered the game with a bit more confidence than they had after recent results.

“It was a must-win game for them, and it was an important game for us given we have to play Cheltenham this weekend. A loss would have made it very tight at the bottom going into the final weekend.

“Our only worry is that three teams might be relegated from our division because of how the league above is structured.

“It makes our finishing fourth from bottom very important.”

The mood in the Trowbridge camp is high following the 25-run win against fellow strugglers Westbury.

Batting first, Trowbridge were bowled out for 222 in 48.4 overs with opening pair Tom Oakley (57) and Sam Julyan (43) providing a solid foundation for the hosts to build on.

But a below-par performance from the middle order saw Weaver’s troops collapse from 192-6 to all out just 30 runs later.

Though Westbury kept up with the run rate in reply, Harry Veal’s accurate bowling proved a force to be reckoned with as he returned with match-winning figures of 5-26.

“Confidence is high in our camp,” said Weaver.

“We’re winning games, we’re winning close games but we’re also winning convincingly.

“All of that put together will hopefully mean we can give Cheltenham a good game.

“And if we don’t get the result we want then hopefully we can pick up enough points to put ourselves in a position of safety.”

Meanwhile this weekend’s clash against Cheltenham is likely to be a troublesome one for Trowbridge, with Weaver accepting that bonus points must be picked up if his side are to be certain of their Prem Two Glos/Wilts status for next season.

Weaver said: “They’ve got a very high quality of players, a lot of Gloucestershire players playing for them.

“I think it’s therefore important we don’t let the names of certain individuals affect ourselves.

“We need to play our own cricket and express ourselves. We don’t want to get tied down because of who we’re playing against.

“Ultimately we’re playing against 11 other capable cricketers.”
