WARMINSTER head into Saturday’s final game of the season still in the hunt to be crowned WEPL Wiltshire champions despite seeing their end-of-season slump continue last weekend.

Peter Hickerton’s side are third in the table ahead of the upcoming finale at home to Royal Wootton Bassett, sitting 10 points adrift of league leaders Chippenham.

Warminster need a good win over Bassett coupled with defeats for both Chippenham at home to bottom side Marlborough and second-placed Marshfield against Corsham 2nd.

However, that would require Hickerton’s troops ending a damaging six-week winless run following their latest defeat against Corsham, which saw them beaten by 40 runs.

Warminster had set the pace at the top of the table early in the campaign after securing victory in each of their opening 11 fixtures this summer, but now know the destination of the title is out of their hands after a severe drop off in form.

They may have fancied their chances of ending that barren spell last Saturday after bowling out Corsham for 197.

Captain Hickerton, Rory Cullinan, John Powell and Dominic Webb took two wickets apiece, while Will Wales top scored for the home side with 67.

Warminster had looked well placed to chase that down when reaching 60 without loss. However, once the first wicket went down, the visitors never recovered and were eventually dismissed for 157 inside 42 overs.

Again, the wickets were spread around the attack as John Bedbrook, Craig Chaplin, Michael Myatt and Ned Jones claimed two each.

Brad Perry and Mark Coxon-Tenty joint top-scored for Warminster with the bat, registering 34 apiece.

Corsham are currently third from bottom in the table heading into the last round of fixtures and will want a good haul of points against Marshfield to stay there should it be determined that only two teams will be relegated.
