ROSS Williams scored a hat-trick of tries as Warminster made it four wins from five in Dorset & Wilts One North with a stunning comeback at Sutton Benger, turning a 27-14 deficit into a 45-27 success.

Benger dominated the opening moments and despite a strong defensive effort from the Amber and Blues, the hosts did eventually break through to score an unconverted try from a lineout.

When Warminster did eventually get their hands on the ball, they managed to make an impact as fly-half Jimmy Rees released Dan McIntyre and he was able to evade the attempted tackles of the opposition to score under the posts.

The visitors soon extended the lead as a quick tap penalty by Rees saw him run down the blindside before finding Williams to run in and score the first of his treble. Rees converted both tries.

However, the home side dominated the remainder of the half and despite being reduced in numbers after a yellow card, Benger scored three tries before the whistle to take control of the contest.

Benger continued the surge at the start of the second half as another touchdown made it 27-14.

A stunned Warminster swiftly sent on Luke Windsor and he made an instant impact as strong running and good offloads kept the pace of the game fast.

In the space of 15 minutes, Warminster had taken control of the game and managed to score four tries playing the fast and expansive game they strive for.

Two scores came from Williams, including a strong powerful run through several defenders, while McIntyre also got his second and Dan Harris claimed a touchdown too, three of those scores being converted.

Harris would go on and score a second himself as the game headed towards its conclusion as Warminster sealed a superb comeback win.

Elsewhere, Melksham were also victorious at the weekend with a last-minute Matt Van Den Boogard try earning a narrow 18-16 success away at Avonvale.

The game started evenly, with Melksham the first onto the scoreboard through a penalty from fly-half Connor Randall.

The home team replied shortly afterwards with the contest’s first try, but the lead was to change hands again before half-time as, from a scrum won against the head, quick hands allowed Callum Gillard to side-step the Avonvale defence and score to make it 8-5 at the break.

That lead was extended 10 minutes after the restart as scrum-half Rory Mulgrew hacked forward before touching down.

Avonvale were able to get back into the game when they capitalised from a reversed penalty decision, kicking to the corner to set up a catch-and-drive try from a lineout.

Their tally was reinforced minutes later as a penalty levelled things up at 13-13 before Avonvale got their noses in front with another kick shortly afterwards.

Melksham rallied in the closing stages, though, and Brad Wilkins chased a kick deep into the home half and after winning the ball, he sent it wide to Van Den Boogaard to score winning try.
