PLAYER-COACH Matt Taylor admits Swindon Town must live and learn from Saturday’s heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of Carlisle United, while channelling their focus towards next weekend's trip to Port Vale.

Three second-half strikes, coupled with Ashley Nadesan’s effort with just a handful of minutes remaining in the opening period, ensured Town crashed to their heaviest League Two defeat of the season during Richie Wellens’ first game in charge as the club's new manager.

The loss relegated Swindon to 18th in the division and confirmed they are now closer to the relegation positions than they are the play-off frame.

Taylor insists the Town players must review the game with the aim of cutting out sloppy errors in defence while looking to improve their form in front of goal.

“There is nothing we can do other than review and ultimately try not to make the same mistakes again,” said Taylor.

“The boys are disappointed. The only thing you can do is concentrate on the next game. You can’t affect what happened on Saturday.

“We can affect next Saturday’s performance against Port Vale.

“There is no point when things are going well being too high, or when things aren’t going well being too low.

“There needs to be a level of consistency in our performance, which starts next Saturday.”

The loss to Carlisle means Town are now without a league win at home since they beat Tranmere Rovers 3-2 on Saturday, August 18.

Only one-goal victories over Newport County – in the Checkatrade Trophy – and non-league York City – in the FA Cup – have stemmed Town’s run of losses and draws at the Energy Check County Ground.

And while Taylor cannot speak for the team, he admits he personally feels no anxiety when taking to the County Ground turf in front of home supporters.

He said: “I don’t personally feel any anxiety.

“I think fans have been wonderful. They turned out in numbers on Saturday and I must thank them.

“The manager wants us to play football, he wants us to do things in the right way.

“He has openly said he will never criticise a player for trying to do the right thing and giving the ball away.

“As a group of men, we need to take that on board. If we don’t, then it is the reaction when we give the ball away that really counts.”
