A LAST-GASP converted try snatched Melksham a 15-13 victory away at Minety in Dorset & Wilts One North.

Kicking downfield with the slope and high winds at their backs, Minety pressurised the Melksham defence and they got the first points on the board with a penalty.

The home side then added another kick, and after spotting a gap in the Melksham defence after a scrum, they scored a converted try to take a 13-0 lead into half-time.

After the restart, Melksham – now playing with the pitch advantage – got on the scoreboard with a penalty from Callum Hurn.

The visitors continued to battle hard and debutant Chris Griffin ran a superb line off the back of a breakdown to score Melksham’s first try, although the conversion was lost in the wind.

Looking to maintain their attacking momentum, Melksham worked the ball wide for Luke Cador to level the scores in the corner with a try before Hurn slotted the hardest kick of the day with the conversion to claim the victory for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Warminster put in a brave fight but went down 22-7 at home to leaders Combe Down.

Warminster controlled the game early on as Gav Pratt used his boot to keep Combe Down pinned in their own half, while good breaks from Dan McIntyre piled on the pressure.

However, Combe Down showed why they were top of the league with strong defensive work and they eventually struck first with an interception to run in a try from close range.

The visitors then scored a second try soon afterwards, this time after a well-structured passage of play to make it 14-0 at half-time.

Warminster got off to the worst possible start in the second half as Jake Houston was shown a yellow card and from the resulting penalty, the visitors took three points.

But the home side fought back into the game and Jack McIntyre used his strength to smash through tackles and gain yardage.

From a quick tap penalty, Jason Sprangle further pressurised Combe Down and after strong carries from Steve Rowbotham and Dan Bowman, McIntyre burst through a gap before offloading to Tom Evans to dive over for the score.

Ross Williams added extras, although Combe Down had the final word with their third try of the day late on.
