NORTH Wilts and Clarrie Dunbar indoor clubs have both qualified for round four in the Mason Trophy – the ladies’ O60 double rinks competition.

They are the only local clubs in Area 16 still with a chance of winning a national team title.

Both clubs have been eliminated from all other national indoor team competitions – and one will be eliminated this time around too as they have been drawn against each other in the last 32 on Friday.

Chippenham-based North Wilts B reached the last 32 as they thrashed Nailsea A 55-17.

Meanwhile, Standerwick-based Clarrie Dunbar won their third-round match against Thornbury 40-26.

The winners of this derby clash are drawn against either Handy Cross IBC (High Wycombe) or Oxford & District IBC (Littlemore) in the last 16 on March 1.

  • NATIONAL championship events in Area 16 and the last step to gaining qualification for the final stages at Nottingham in late March or early April are near to being finalised.

Teresa King (Clarrie Dunbar) will meet Laura Holden (Clevedon) in the ladies’ area singles final at Bristol City & County on March 5.

Irene Button and Jean Collier (North Wilts) beat club colleagues Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs 17-13 in the ladies’ pairs semi-finals to book a place in the final against Holden & Stefanie Branfield (Clevedon), date and venue is still to be arranged.

In the ladies’ area triples, Thelma Bailey, Debbie Shadwell and Jeanette Wheeler (CD) beat a trio from Clevedon comfortably 24-15 in the area semi-finals.

They will now face a trio from MidGlos in the area final, which is to be arranged.

And in the area fours, the team of Jean Collier, Irene Button, Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs (NW) have reached the area 16 final after a 19-13 victory over Teresa King’s quartet from Clarrie.

They will face MidGlos’ Pye team in the final, which is still to be arranged.

North Wilts’ Jacobs has also reached the area final in the O60s ladies singles after a comfortable 21-9 win over Gill Fry (MidGlos).

She will face either Jeanette Wheeler (CD) or Bristol’s Rose Constant in the area final.

And Jacobs has also reached the area final in the two bowl singles after a 21-10 victory over Margaret Dyer (Clevedon). Her opponent will be either Constant or club colleague Irene Button.

In the men’s singles, Andy Colebrooke won a tight area semi-final 21-18 against Dunbar colleague Wayne Snook and will face Malvern Hills’ Shaun Jones in the area final at MidGlos on March 2.

Geoff Moore and Andy Moore (NW) edged home 14-13 against Keith Bailey and partner (CD) to book a place in the Area 16 men’s pairs final at MidGlos on March 3 against Tom Holmes and Jones (M Hills).

A triple from Clarrie Dunbar of Snook, Dale Taylor and Colebrooke are through to the area final in the triples.

They will face the trio of Harvey Griffiths, Tom Holmes and Jones (Malvern Hills) on March 7 at Bristol C&C (6.30pm).

  • THE annual clash between the county indoor women and county indoor men’s teams will be staged at North Wilts IBC this Saturday.

With the loss of Christie Miller and Swindon Manor not affiliated to the county indoor association, the two teams are drawn from hosts North Wilts, Swindon Westlecot and Five Rivers in Salisbury.

  • CLARRIE Dunbar men have won the revamped Central region of the Wessex League.

They clinched the title with their seventh straight victory of the campaign with a 96-66 victory over St Andrews (Weston-super-Mare).

But Clarrie only took 12 of the 16 points on offer as St Andrews shared the rink honours 2-2.

The result took top-of-the-table Dunbar to 100 points, 32 clear of second-placed North Wilts and 40 ahead of St Andrews.

It therefore means the runners-up spot in the Central region and the other place in the play-offs will go right down to the wire.

North Wilts are in pole position and meet St Andrews on February 24 where a win on shots and one rink success would be sufficient to see them through.

That is unless Bristol are victorious in their last group match this Sunday and win handsomely against Thornbury.
