MELKSHAM Town manager Kieran Baggs criticised his team’s lack of concentration in key moments after they lost 3-2 at home to Southern League Division One South leaders Blackfield & Langley on Saturday.

Town took the lead in the 12th minute as debutant Matt Smith netted before three unanswered goals from the visitors prior to half-time put Baggs’ side in a precarious position.

Just before the break, Melksham were awarded a penalty that Jon Davies calmly stroked home, yet the second 45 minutes passed without further success for either side and Town suffered their second defeat in a row.

Baggs was left frustrated that his side had yet again competed with a top side in the division but had been let down by ‘fine margins’.

He said: “It was a funny 10-minute period where we’d made individual mistakes and over the last month or so, that’s been the theme with us conceding goals.

“We’ve switched off a few moments and given away two cheap free-kicks and they’ve scored from both of them.

“No side has cut us open repeatedly and had loads of chances on goal, it’s just been those fine margins where we’ve given away cheap goals.

“Especially against top of the league, if you switch off for those brief moments then those chances are guaranteed to turn into goals.

Saturday’s defeat to Blackfield & Langley means Melksham have now won only two of their last nine fixtures and hopes of an unlikely play-off shot are fading fast.

Baggs stressed the important of his side’s next two fixtures and said they must find a way of chaining a run of results together if they want to be playing football in May.

He said: “We’ve got a massive two games coming up now with Mangotsfield on Saturday and Bideford on Monday. Those two games are now going to predict where we will finish this season.

“It will be a massive two weeks for the club in deciding how we end up doing. I believe we have a squad good enough to be in the play-off picture, it will just depend on whether we can put a string of good results together.”
