WROUGHTON were able to increase their advantage at the top of the Wiltshire League Premier Division table at the weekend despite dropping points in a 1-1 draw at home to Trowbridge Town.

The Weir Field side pushed their advantage to seven points over second-placed Kintbury Rangers after they went down to a narrow 2-1 loss at third-in-the-table Melksham Town Reserves.

However, the title race looks likely to go all the way to the wire as Kintbury do still have two games in hand.

Trowbridge looked on course for a shock win at Wroughton when Matt Dixon put them ahead, but Craig Boxden spared the leaders’ blushes from the penalty spot to earn them a draw.

Meanwhile at Melksham, Adam Mitchell gave the home side the lead at the break, but Kintbury’s Shaun Thorp restored parity from the penalty spot.

Melksham were not to be denied, though, and a second from Mitchell secured his side the win as they moved within three points of Rangers above them.

Elsewhere, Shrewton United were the most convincing winners of the weekend as they thrashed visitors Football ID 6-1.

Dean Smith’s penalty got the ball rolling for United before Craig Appleby’s brace and one from Charlie Jackson made it 4-0 at the break.

Football ID pulled a goal back shortly after the interval, but Steve Holvey’s strike and a third for Appleby to complete his hat-trick saw Shrewton pull further clear.

Bottom side Pewsey Vale Development picked up just a second league win of the season as they crushed Cricklade Town 3-0 at home.

Goals from Harvey Flippance (2) and Ethan Fishlock saw Pewsey move within a point of second-from-bottom Devizes Town Reserves.

Malmesbury Victoria Development edged to a 2-1 success away at Purton.

Gareth Jones and Elliott Drage were the Malmesbury scorers as William Backhouse replied for the hosts.

Ed McCormarck, Corey Harbour-Burgess and Dan Lardner fired Corsham Town Reserves to a convincing 3-0 success at home to Ludgershall Sports.

Finally, Tyrhys Mifsud’s penalty was enough to earn Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development a 1-0 win away at Marlborough Town.
