WILTSHIRE sides endured a horror week in the FA Cup preliminary qualifying round with Highworth Town being the only team to progress while Bradford Town, Melksham Town, Westbury United, Corsham Town, and Royal Wootton Bassett Town all exited the competition.

Highworth emerged 2-1 winners from a competitive affair against Wantage Town thanks to goals from Felipe Barcelos and Rob Dean.

The Worthians now welcome Wessex League Premier Division outfit Shaftesbury to the Save on Tyres Stadium on Saturday, September 4 in the first qualifying round.

Meanwhile, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were well beaten by Ardley Town in a replay following their initial 2-2 draw at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground last Saturday.

Sam Collier’s side had nabbed a replay after Gio Wrona equalised in the dying minutes of the first tie, but the north Wiltshire club lost 3-0 in Tuesday’s replay in Oxfordshire.

Bradford Town also lost a replay against Alton on a night where things seemed to go wrong from the first whistle.

Liam Watson landed awkwardly in the early moments and went down in some pain, leading the Bradford player to be forced off.

Alton subsequently scored three times throughout the 90 minutes to comfortably put themselves in the hat for the next round. Bradford had managed to secure a replay in the first place following a 1-1 draw at Trowbridge Road on Saturday.

Corsham Town lost 5-1 to Fleet Town despite going a goal up on home soil last Saturday. Luke Ballinger scored for Kieran Baggs’ side, only for the visitors to come back with a vengeance and comfortably book their spot in the first qualifying round.

Westbury United lost 2-0 to another Wessex League Premier Division outfit in Hamworthy United, and Melksham Town also exited the competition following their 1-0 defeat at home to Shepton Mallett.

Southern League Premier South side Swindon Supermarine now enter the first qualifying round.
