ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town progressed into the FA Vase second round after a hat-trick from John Mills helped Sam Collier’s men thrash Downton 4-0 at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground on Saturday.

Bassett - who will compete in the second round for just the fourth time in the club’s history - went 1-0 up 10 minutes before the break thanks to Mills’ first.

A dominant second 45 from Collier’s men saw Mills net twice more, adding to Gio Wrona’s neat finish, and sets up a second-round tie at home to South West Peninsula League Premier Division East side, Torpoint Athletic.

Bassett remain the only Wiltshire side left in the competition after Bradford Town lost 2-1 away at Falmouth Town. Mark Wall netted for the Bobcats, but there was to be no repeat of the club’s deep run to the last 16 in the 2019-20 campaign.

Elsewhere at the weekend, Westbury United beat Lydney Town 4-1 at home despite having Ashton Shanley sent off in the first half. Two goals from Ricky Hulbert were added to by Dan Demkiv and Jacob Hutchings.

Shrivenham won 3-2 away at Hallen thanks to goals from Tyger Hall, Jonathan Peachey-Score and Jamie Stones, while Calne Town lost 3-0 away at Westfields.

Also on the road, Fairford Town drew 1-1 against Malvern Town thanks to a Ross Langworthy strike.

Corsham drew 1-1 at home to Bishops Cleeve on Saturday after Charlie Maddison’s goal before surging to a 3-1 victory at home to Roman Glass St George in midweek. Gary Higdon and Matt Morris made contributions.

Westbury picked up their seventh league win after beating Bassett 3-2 away.
